What Hydrogen Is

Hydrogen is a gas that can store and carry energy. It can be produced in different ways, including from natural gas or by using electricity to split water through electrolysis.

Green Hydrogen

Green hydrogen is made using renewable electricity. It is often discussed as a potential fuel for sectors that are hard to electrify directly, such as some industrial processes, heavy transport or long-duration energy storage.

Important Limits

Hydrogen is not automatically the best answer for every energy problem. Producing, storing and transporting it requires energy, infrastructure and careful safety management.

Where It May Be Valuable

Hydrogen may be most useful where direct electrification is difficult. For homes and many buildings, electric technologies such as heat pumps are often more efficient.
