The Role Of Gas Today

Gas has played a major role in heating homes, cooking, industry and electricity generation. It is familiar, flexible and supported by a large existing network.

The Challenge

Fossil gas produces carbon emissions when burned. Reducing dependence on fossil gas is therefore an important part of the transition to a lower-carbon energy system.

What Is Biogas?

Biogas is produced when organic material breaks down without oxygen. It can come from food waste, agricultural waste, sewage treatment and other biological sources. When upgraded, it can become biomethane.

Where It Fits

Biogas is not a complete replacement for all fossil gas, but it can play a useful role where electrification is difficult, where waste streams exist and where local circular energy systems are possible.
